The EU Pay Transparency Directive is your chance to lead the charge towards fair pay in your organisation. It ensures wage systems are transparent, criteria based, and gender-neutral. It applies from the time you put in a job ad though the duration of each employee’s experience at your company.
Why is this important? There's a persistent 13% wage gap between women and men in Europe that hasn't changed in over a decade. Lack of transparency has made it difficult to tackle pay discrimination.
This directive, part of the EU's gender equality strategy for 2020-2025, is a bold step towards closing that gap. As an HR leader, you have the opportunity to drive this change and lead your organisation towards greater equity and fairness.

Pay transparency brings its share of challenges, but it’s also a unique opportunity for HR to drive meaningful change. Ensuring compliance, closing pay gaps, and maintaining employee privacy are no small tasks. This requires thorough data analysis, smart strategies, and clear, empathetic communication.
Additionally, setting up job architecture—standardising roles, responsibilities, and career paths—can be another complex challenge.
It’s a collaborative and time-consuming process, but it lays the groundwork for fairness and clarity throughout your organisation.
While it’s demanding, pay transparency allows HR leaders like you to build trust, fairness, and accountability. With the right tools and support, these challenges can become a springboard for building a more equitable workplace.

Yes, if you have employees in Europe. Companies with more than 250 employees must report annually on the gender pay gap. Those with more than 150 employees will report every three years, and this will later extend to those with more than 100 employees.
The directive aims to ensure fair pay practices and transparency across all sectors, making it essential for HR leaders to understand and implement the necessary changes.
To comply with the directive, you will need detailed data on salaries, pay gaps, and gender equity within your organisation. This includes information on employee compensation, job roles, and any disparities in pay between different groups.
Accurate and comprehensive data collection is crucial to meet the directive's requirements and demonstrate your commitment to pay equity.
The new rules, which were adopted already in 2023, will not enter into force until June 2026, but for HR departments, it’s a good idea to start preparing now.
